Sewanee rushes past Austin, 31-10

SHERMAN, Texas (Sept. 22, 2012) – Junior quarterback Curtis Johnson rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead Sewanee to a 31-10 victory over Austin College, Saturday afternoon, at Apple Stadium.

The victory improved the Tigers to 2-2 this season.

After winning the coin toss and electing to receive, Sewanee quickly marched down the field. On its opening possession, senior slotback Jase Brooks capped off a 12-play 81-yard drive with a three yard touchdown run.

After the Tiger defense held Austin to a three and out, Sewanee scored its second touchdown when sophomore running back Barrett Goodson found the end zone from eight yards out.

In the second quarter, the Kangaroos finally got on the board when quarterback Austin Rainer connected with P.J. Fuller for a 37-yard touchdown pass with 8:59 left in the half.

On the ensuing drive, Sewanee stayed on the ground with 16 rushing plays. With that, the Tigers were able to run a number of minutes off the clock. After freshman quarterback Cody Daniel pushed Sewanee to the Austin 11-yard line, senior kicker Garrett Schlosser put Sewanee up 17-7 with a 28-yard field goal with :28 seconds left.

In the second half, Sewanee pushed the lead to 24-7 thanks to its defense. After senior linebacker J.P. Boudreaux caused a fumble, Brandon Campbell picked up the ball and raced 30 yards for the touchdown.

After Austin added a 33-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter, Johnson scored his touchdown from four yards out with 7:25 to play. 

After struggling to establish its dominant running game against Washington & Lee and Maryville, Sewanee broke through with 376 yards on the ground, Saturday. Additionally, the Tigers held almost an 11-minute advantage in time of possession.

Individually, Goodson rushed for a career-high 56 yards on seven carries. Additionally, junior linebacker Dave McKeithen continued his outstanding season with a game-high nine tackles.

As a team, Sewanee limited Austin to 173 total yards and 11 first downs.

After two straight weeks on the road, Sewanee returns home September 29th against Willamette. Kickoff is schedule for 1:00 p.m., at Harris Stadium.
