Field Hockey Drops Contest at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Sewanee field hockey team's first trip to Virginia in 2019 saw defeat on Saturday from the Jopson Athletic Complex, as the Tigers lost to the Eagles of Bridgewater, 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bridgewater came out swinging early, taking 13 first quarter shots, and eight were saved by Barbara Canty.

-However, in the ninth minute, Meghan Obaugh found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season.

-The home team had a strong defensive presence in the first 30 minutes, as the Eagles took 15 shots to the Tigers' one, coming in the final seconds of the first half by Ceara Caffrey.

-In the 34th minute, the Eagles padded their lead with a Kallie Moyer goal.

-After taking just one shot in the first 45 minutes of play, Sewanee had five in the fourth quarter. After Caffrey had a shot saved in the 48th minute, she found the back of the cage 30 seconds later to make it a 2-1 affair.

-Sewanee had four shots on goal the rest of the game but all were stopped by Bridgewater's keep.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ceara Caffrey led the Tigers with four total shots, three on goal. The senior netted her eighth goal of the year.

-Anne Cleveland and Molly Wheeler each had a shot on goal.

-Barbara Canty (2-4) recorded 10 saves in full time.

BRIDGEWATER KEY STATISTICS
-The Eagles finished with 20 total shots in the contest, led by Courtney Cooke with seven, three on goal. She also added an assist.

-Karinne Moyer followed with five shots, two on goal.

-Ali Bishop (1-3) saved four shots for the hosts in full time.
