Hornsby’s Penalty Stroke Goal Sends Field Hockey to SAA Semifinals

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Sewanee field hockey team used a 74th minute goal in double overtime to see the Tigers advance to the semifinals of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Field Hockey Tournament. The Tigers downed the hosts in the Pioneers of Transylvania, 2-1, Friday afternoon from Pat Deacon Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The teams could not find the back of the cage in the first 30 minutes of the game, as Transy out-shot Sewaeen, 6-3. Additionally, the Pioneers took five shots in the second period while limiting Sewanee to one.

-In the 36th minute, Buckley Norman struck for the back of the cage for her seventh goal of the season to give Sewanee a 1-0 advantage.

-With 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter, TU tied the contest up with a Lilly Kramer goal from a Brianna McCulley pass.

-After a scoreless fourth quarter, the game was forced into overtime. Sewanee had the advantage in the first extra period, taking five shots to Transy's two, but after 70 minutes, nothing was decided.

-In the second overtime, after getting a penalty corner out of the opposing circle, Sewanee went downfield and was fouled in the circle, forcing a penalty stroke. Alex Hornsby was summoned to help Sewanee advance to the semis. The junior prevailed with her fourth goal of the year to seal the victory.

-Alex Hornsby led the Tigers with six total shots, three on goal, and the game-winning goal in double overtime.

-Ceara Caffrey and Buckley Norman each added three shots.

-Barbara Canty (6-10) saved seven shots in 73:09 between the net.

TRANSYLVANIA KEY STATISTICS
-Harper Zeitz led the Pioneers with six shots, three on-target, while Brianna McCully posted four shots.

-Sidney Varney (3-13) stopped four shots in 73 minutes in goal.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will now take on the defending SAA Regular Season Champions in Centre in the semifinals Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
