No. 37 Sewanee handles Piedmont 8-1 in season opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2017) – The No. 37 Sewanee men's tennis team opened its 2016-17 season with an 8-1 win over visiting Piedmont, Friday.

The freshmen combination of Aubrey Davis and Jordan Brewer opened the match with a convincing 8-1 victory over Robbie Werner and Bryan Barnett at No. 2 doubles. With Davis controlling the baseline with aggressive backhands, Brewer finished off multiple points with powerful overheads.

Sophomore Mac McCullough and freshman sensation Dane Hawthorne came off the court next with another 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Miller and Patterson. McCullough's serve was the dominant weapon and Hawthorne attacked the net aggressively throughout the match.

Finally, senior ITA All-American Avery Schober and freshman Andres Carro teamed up to take the win at No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 victory Nathan Metzger and Jackson Hill.

Entering the singles matches with a 3-0 team lead, freshman Alejandro Becker continued the Tiger march with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bryan Barnett at No. 3 singles.

Senior Scott Gallimore handled Kenlar Cumbass in convincing fashion 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 while sophomore Sean Halloran followed closely behind with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Harry Labollitta.

Sophomore Jack Gray came off the court next with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Nathan Metzger while freshman Hayden Loeb edged Robbie Werner 6-3, 6-4.

With the Tigers ahead 8-0, Piedmont finally got on the board with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 decision by Jackson Hill over Tiger freshman Hamza Khan at No. 5.

The Tigers welcome SAA foe Centre for a 2:00 p.m., match Saturday at the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Courts.
