No. 20 Men’s Tennis Concludes Season in NCAA Second Round

ATLANTA - The 20th-ranked Sewanee men's tennis team suffered a 5-3 decision to No. 23 N.C. Wesleyan, champions of the USA South Athletic Conference, in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon from the Woodruff P.E. Center. The regional rounds are hosted by Emory University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Purple and Gold saw themselves in a hole early in doubles, as the Battling Bishops claimed the No. 3 point, 8-5.

-Sewanee evened the match with a win at No. 2, as Jack Gray/Andres Carro won the point, 8-5.

-However, the battle in doubles came at the No. 1 point, as Jordan Brewer/Aubrey Davis posted an 8-7 win to take the lead into singles.

-Trailing 7-5, the duo rallied to even the match at seven apiece and defeated the fifth-ranked team in the region in the tiebreak, 10-8.

-In singles, the Tigers made it a 3-1 lead with a win by Brewer at the No. 4 point, 6-1, 6-3, but the Battling Bishops won the next four points to clinch the match.

-At the No. 1 flight, Carro fell behind 6-2 after the first set before rallying with a 7-5 win to even the set up at a win apiece. However, he was defeated in the clinching point, 6-1, that secured the match for N.C. Wesleyan.

-With the win, the Battling Bishops advance to the third round, where they will face the host Eagles on Saturday, who defeated Washington & Lee, 5-0 earlier in the day.

-Sewanee finishes the regular season with a 21-7 record, and the program locked up the major awards by the Southern Athletic Association: Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year.
