Volleyball Opens 2018 Campaign with Split of Dubuque and Brevard

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Sewanee volleyball team opened the 2018 season with a split at the Rhodes Invitational, falling in the first match to Dubuque in five sets before sweeping Brevard to wrap up the day.

-The Tigers trailed 4-0 early in the first set before calling a timeout, but the Spartans got the lead to 8-1 before Sewanee went on a 13-5 run to take their first lead of the set.

-The teams went back-and-forth in the set, but the Tigers, leading 20-19, finished the set on a 5-2 run to win the first set.

-Momentum was definitely on the side of the Tigers in the second set, as they won 25-19 to take a 2-0 series lead.

-In the third set, just as they did in the first set, Dubuque got out to a 5-0 lead before the Tigers rallied to even the set. The Spartans would avoid the shutout with a 9-1 run to win the set, 25-15.

-Trailing 10-7 in the fourth set, the Spartans came back and fought off the Tigers, 25-19, to force a fifth set.

-The Purple and Gold started the deciding set, 6-2, but the Spartans rallied to tie the score at nine points apiece thanks to a 7-2 run of their own. From there, Dubuque secured the match, 15-12.

-In the evening match, the Tigers recorded 13 service aces as a team, en route to a sweep of the Tornados, 25-10, 25-12, 25-15.

-For the match, Sewanee had an attacking percentage of .427 (41-9-75) and allowed and .061 percentage by Brevard (18-14-66).

-Destiny Stewart, the reigning Southern Athletic Association Newcomer of the Year, dropped 20 kills to lead all attackers in the opening match with just nine errors. The sophomore added 14 digs in the contest. She finished the day with 24 kills and 18 digs.

-Olivia Nichols also tallied a double-double in the Dubuque match, recording 16 digs and 11 kills. She added seven digs against Brevard.

-Lilly Reilly posted 14 digs and 10 kills against the Spartans. Against the Tornados, the freshman recorded eight kills in 15 attempts with a .467 attack percentage.

-Constance Connolly finished with 76 assists on the day, including a career-high 45 assists against Dubuque. The junior also added 20 digs in the first match.

-Kara Wright led the Spartans with a double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs. She also assisted on six blocks.

-Johanna Steggall also added 14 digs, while Sarrah Farraday killed 10 attacks.

-Jordan Lloyd led the Tornados with seven kills, while Mariana Rodriguez posted six digs.

The weekend trip in Memphis concludes Saturday with matches against Rust and Huntingdon.
